A professional reference for identifying genuine Chinese postage stamps, detecting modern forgeries, and verifying key security features.

1. Overview & Key Challenges /

Due to high market value, classic and early PRC stamps (such as the 1980 T.46 Monkey Stamp, Cultural Revolution series, and Mei Lanfang miniature sheet) are prime targets for counterfeiters. Authentication requires examining print processes, paper structure, gum, and security markers.

Core Authentication Steps /

Step 1: Printing Process Analysis / 1.

English: Genuine classic stamps usually utilize Photogravure or Engraving (intaglio). Engraved stamps feature tactile, raised ink lines under magnification. Counterfeits often use modern offset or inkjet printing, showing flat dots under 30x zoom.

Step 2: Paper & UV Fluorescence / 2.

English: Authentic stamps use special dedicated philatelic paper without optical brighteners. Under a UV light (365nm), fake stamps made with commercial paper often emit bright blue fluorescence. Genuine stamps are generally inert unless special fluorescent ink was applied.

Step 3: Perforation & Size / 3.

English: Authentic perforations are neat, round, and precise (measured using a perforation gauge). Re-perforated stamps often display uneven tooth spacing, ragged edges, or incorrect hole diameters.

Step 4: Micro-printing & Secret Marks / 4.

English: Modern PRC issues from 1996 onwards include micro-printed serial numbers, fluorescent anti-counterfeiting fibers, and custom security codes embedded in the design layer.

Hair Line Texture (毛发质感): The genuine monkey stamp features clear, distinct black fur lines printed in red and black engraved layers. Fake ones appear blurry or merged.
Red Ink Bleed (红墨渗迹): The back of a genuine monkey stamp usually exhibits natural light red ink bleed marks from the heavy engraving process.
