Traditional sports of Chinese ethnic minorities came from production and life. With rich contents, various forms and distinctive features, the long-standing sports are very popular among the Chinese ethnic minorities, showing strong ethnic colours and vitality. The traditional sports of Chinese ethnic minorities help enhance the physical quality of the people, improving understanding between different ethnic groups, develop the splendid traditional cultures of the ethnic minorities, and inspire the Chinese people with the national spirit. Today, there are over 100 major traditional competitive and performance events among the 55 ethnic minorities.

P.S. 为了祝贺第七届全国少数民族传统运动会顺利举行，国家邮政局发行此套邮票。邮票图案采用水粉画法，前景突出运动项目的局部，在主题人物的刻画上从形象到服饰都追求准确性和代表性，色彩艳丽；后景尽量突出运动的完整性和生动性，色彩清淡，使画面构成虚实相生的艺术效果。设计者力图用服饰贯穿主题形象的刻画，不仅使色彩既跳跃鲜明又符合实际，而且达到了单幅相对独立，整套和谐一致的整体关系。

第七届全国少数民族运动会定于2003年9月20日至27日在宁夏银川市和石嘴山市隆重举行。预计参加本届运动会的总人数约7000人。本届运动会设立珍珠球、龙舟、武术、民族式摔跤、马术等14项竞赛项目;表演项目分竞技、技巧和综合三类，共100多项。

本届少数民族运动会会徽由一个寓意为“塞上明珠—-宁夏”的绿色圆形和一个“宁”字汉语拼音的第一个字母“N”以及红色的“七”组成，其整体造型是一个抽象的、奋力向前冲刺的运动员。吉祥物造型是一只可爱的小羊，身穿回族服装，取名“慧慧”。
