白鹤属鹤形目鹤科。其形体比丹顶鹤稍大，全身羽毛洁白。白鹤属大型涉禽，生活在沼泽、浅滩、草甸地带，以植物嫩芽、昆虫、鱼及软体动物等为食。它是迁徙鸟和越冬鸟，属永久性配偶，雌雄鹤配偶之前有很精彩的对舞和对唱。一般每窝产卵两枚，于四五月份产下，由雌雄鸟轮流卧孵，孵化期一般为30多天。白鹤是中国珍贵鸟类，属一类保护动物，同时也是国际一级稀有濒危动物。目前世界上有十五种鹤，中国有其中的八种。

本套邮票为中国邮电部1986年5月22日发行，共3枚，票名均为“白鹤”。设计者为中国画最有代表性的画家之一黄永玉。白鹤的形象显然触动了作者艺术创作的激情，三幅画奔放洒脱，典雅华贵，具有超然不凡的气势，表明作者画艺已臻化境。同时，从画中可以明显看出那一时期中国画的变动趋向，即在保留传统风格的基础上，吸收借鉴西洋画和日本画的某些特点，适当增强三维光影效果和哲理意境，使中国画在表现质感和层次感方面有明显改进
