The Ninth National Games of the People’s Republic of China, the first large-scale, comprehensive national games in the new century and new millennium, were held from November 11 to 25,2001 in Guangzhou. There were 30 events, including 345 contests. More than 12,300 sportsmen from provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government, the PLA and various associations attended the preliminaries and finals with lofty sportsmanship and high spirits. The event fully displayed the great sports achievements of the nation, and symbolized a great stride the Chinese Nation had made into the 21st Century as a giant in the East.

P.S. 2001年11月11日中华人民共和国第九届运动会在广州广东奥林匹克中心体育场开幕。
这套邮票的2枚图案都绘有第九届全运会会徽，并标有“2001”和“中国广东”字样，点明了时间、地点和画题。第九届全运会会徽的造型洒脱地勾勒出一个阿拉伯数字“9”，既直接传达了九届全运会的信息，又宛如一位矫健、充满活力、奋发向上的运动员，豪迈地跨入新世纪。中间丰满、两端渐细的曲线给人无限的延伸感，配合倾斜的线条，更显奔腾飞跃之意。对比鲜明的红、黄、蓝三色，对视觉有强烈的冲击力。
《入水》（2-1）画面以普蓝色作底衬，用明黄色描绘出了跳水运动员形象，十分夺目；运动员采用头先入水，两臂伸直在头前并拢，身体伸直，身姿优美；设计者采用五彩波纹线表现运动员入水过程，动感强烈，巧妙而独特。
《扣球》（2-2）设计者准确地捕捉住了运动员跳起后，已经完成了挺胸抬头，手臂上举，已经利用展腹收胸的动作将前臂带动上甩到了肩前上方的最高点，手即将触球的瞬间，生动地展现出了运动员矫健优美的形象。特别是采用五彩波纹线表现运动员扣球过程，动感强烈，巧妙而独特。

经国务院批准，由国家体育总局主办，广东省人民政府承办，我国进入新世纪的第一个全运会–中华人民共和国第九届运动会(以下简称九运会)将于2001年11月11日在广州广东奥林匹克中心体育场隆重开幕，11月25日在广州新体育馆闭幕。这是新千年我国举办的第一个规模盛大的全国综合性体育盛会，她象征着中国人民迈向新世纪的开始，展示中华民族昂首阔步走进新时代的精神风貌。举办九运会是为了进一步提高我国体育运动水平，锻炼和培养优秀运动人才，展现体育改革的成就，推动我国体育事业的发展，为社会主义两个文明建设作出贡献。

九运会是21世纪我国举行的首次最大型体坛盛会，回归后的澳门特别行政区亦将首次组队参赛，从而使它成为全运会历史上规模最大、设项最全、参赛人数最多的全国运动会。
