The Eighth National Games of the People’s Republic of China was held from October 12-24, 1997 in Shanghai.

The Eighth National Games was China’s last large-scale, high-level comprehensive sports meet of this century. The games had 28 competition categories in 319 events such as balls, field and track, aquatic and ice events, modern pentathlon, equestrian winter games, etc. and 332 gold medals were conferred. About 50 sports delegations from all provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions, the Army and industrial sports associations competed at the games. The newly-established Chongqing municipality sent its independent delegation for the first time, and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region also dispatched its delegation for the first time and participated in the finals at the games.

During the Eighth National Games, such activities as the Fourth National Sports Arts Exhibition, China Sports Photography Exhibition, China Sports Philately Exhibition and China Sports Equipment and Gears Exposition were held.

中华人民共和国第八届运动会于1997年10月12日至24日在上海举行。本届全运会共设28个比赛项目、319个小项、332枚金牌。

1997年10月12日，为祝贺第八届全运会举行，邮电部发行了《中华人民共和国第八届运动会》纪念邮票，全套2枚, 全张1枚。
