Suzhou gardens are outstanding representatives of classical Chinese garden art. Their history traces back to the Spring‑and‑Autumn period, prospered in Song‑dynasties and reached full bloom in Ming‑Qing dynasties. Integrating mountains, waters, plants and pursuing poetic‑painting conception, they create profound artistic spaces within limited grounds and stand as important symbols of traditional Chinese culture.
Lion Grove Garden was first built in 1342, the 2nd year of Zhizheng reign of Yuan Dynasty. It derives its name from lake‑rock peaks resembling groups of lions. Centuries‑long construction and renovation formed a harmonious layout of rock‑piles, water‑arrangement, architectures and plants. This stamp‑set selects four most representative sights of Lion Grove, showing its diversified garden art and profound humanistic heritage through combinations of buildings, rockeries, water‑scenes and flora.
Stamp (4‑1) depicts Yanyu Hall. As the principal hall and the largest‑ranked main building inside Lion Grove, its title comes from ancient poem in Minor Odes of the Book of Songs, conveying the ideal of joyful gathering between host and guests. Since old times, it has served as an important venue for feasts and refined social gatherings, embodying traditional Chinese garden hospitality and humanistic sentiments.
Stamp (4‑2) shows the Large Tai‑hu‑rock Rockery, the most celebrated landmark of Lion Grove. Twisted lake‑rocks rise like playing lions. The grand rockery forms the visual core of the whole garden and represents peak rock‑piling craftsmanship of classical Chinese gardens. Layered Tai‑hu‑rocks create winding deep tour‑paths, interpreting the ancient wisdom “make artificial scenery look authentic”. Lion‑Peak on top acts as visual highlight embodying the spiritual character of Lion Grove.
Stamp (4‑3) features Mid‑lake Pavilion and True‑Delight Pavilion. Pavilions in classical Chinese gardens serve both for sightseeing and scene‑building. Linked by water, the two pavilions form multi‑layered views. True‑Delight Pavilion got its name from the imperial horizontal board inscribed “Zhen Qu (True Delight)” by Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty, witnessing the encounter between royal culture and garden art. Mid‑lake Pavilion stands amidst water and harmonizes with rocks and trees. The whole frame reflects both literati taste and imperial bearing of Lion Grove.
Stamp (4‑4) portrays Plum‑Query Pavilion. Located on the western elevated ground of the garden, its title originates from the Zen allusion “Ma‑zu Querying Plum Blossom”, implying philosophical pursuit for inner truth. Plum‑trees are widely planted in front of the pavilion. Its naming, spatial arrangement and decorative details merge Zen philosophy and literati aesthetics perfectly.
The stamp‑art adopts classic pen‑and‑water‑colour technique. Firm ink lines define structures, while thin transparent water‑washes lay colours. Vigorous yet soft lines, well‑managed density and elegant pale tint deliver both hard‑line realistic texture and southern‑China literati freehand charm. Pen‑work outlines textures of rocks and architectures; light washes render misty garden atmosphere, achieving progressive changing perspectives and remote artistic conception, fully presenting Lion Grove’s exquisite rockeries, winding water‑courses and serene southern‑Chinese‑garden charm.
