Background:
China Post is scheduled to issue a set of 4 special stamps themed “The Beauty of Mathematics” on March 14, 2025. The stamps are titled Pi, Pythagorean Theorem, Euler’s Formula and Möbius Strip respectively. The total face value of the complete set is 4.70 yuan, with a planned issuance of 6.25 million complete sets and 0.8 million sheetlets of the second format.
General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out at the Scientists’ Forum that efforts should be made to strengthen the development of basic disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. As a key discipline in basic research, mathematics is one of the sources of scientific and technological innovation. From the microcosmic atomic structure to the macroscopic operation of celestial bodies, mathematics provides an accurate way of description. It serves as a tool for us to communicate with nature and a key to exploring the mysteries of the world.
The set of stamps boasts a modern and striking design style. The first stamp, Pi, is a well – known mathematical constant that runs through many disciplines including geometry and physics. The design incorporates the essential definition of Pi. It uses ultra – fine lines to present the classic ancient circle – cutting method for calculating Pi, and displays the 996 digits after the decimal point of Pi in microtext on the stamp. In particular, the first 7 digits are highlighted in orange to honor Zu Chongzhi, a mathematician of China’s Northern and Southern Dynasties. The second stamp, Pythagorean Theorem, represents one of the achievements of ancient Chinese geometry. It clarifies the length relationship among the three sides of a right – triangle, stating that the sum of the squares of the lengths of the two legs is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse. Partial hot stamping technology is adopted on the stamp to show the theorem’s proof process through a layered visual effect. The third stamp, Euler’s Formula (eiπ + 1 = 0), is hailed as “one of the most beautiful formulas in mathematics”. The stamp uses graphic expressions to demonstrate how Euler’s Formula connects five important mathematical constants (e, i, π, 1, 0). The pattern of “Euler’s Eye” on the stamp adopts micro – processing technology, integrating these five constants with anti – counterfeiting technology. The fourth stamp, Möbius Strip, is a magical topological shape with only one surface and one boundary. Partial hot stamping is also used on this stamp, and the rich color changes vividly present the multi – dimensional properties of the Möbius Strip. Under ultraviolet light, the ant tracks on the stamp echo the Milky Way at the bottom of the picture, symbolizing the gradual expansion from the microcosmic field to the broader macrocosmic realm.
The printing technology of the stamps is developed around the displayed content and enhanced based on the image effect, integrating artistry, scientificity and anti – counterfeiting performance. The daylight – type fluorescent ink, used for the first time on stamps, shows different fluorescent effects under daylight and ultraviolet light. This multi – dimensional visual effect of the stamps echoes the multi – dimensional nature of mathematical knowledge. The printing of ultra – fine lines has broken the record for the printing precision of stamps, and the high – precision printing technology reflects the rigor of mathematics. The special key – shaped perforations are designed under the inspiration of the famous saying that “mathematics is the key to unlocking the door to science”, implying that mathematics can help people solve scientific mysteries.
This set of stamps is designed by Xia Jingqiu, edited by Liu Jian, and printed by Beijing Stamp Printing Co., Ltd. using offset printing technology. Besides, partial hot stamping technology is applied to the second and fourth stamps.

该套邮票设计语言现代,使人眼前一亮。第一枚“圆周率”作为广为人知的数学常数,贯穿于几何、物理等众多学科。邮票元素包含了π的本质定义,以极细线表现早期经典割圆法,并将圆周率小数点后996位以缩微文字的方式呈现于画面,特别通过橘色设计突出前7位,纪念我国南北朝时期数学家祖冲之。第二枚“勾股定理”是中国古代几何学的成就之一。它给出了直角三角形三边的长度关系,即任意一个直角三角形的两条直角边长度平方之和等于斜边长度的平方。邮票在局部采用烫印工艺,以分层的视觉形式展现了证明过程。第三枚“欧拉公式”(eiπ +1=0)被誉为“数学中最美的公式之一”,邮票以图形的方式表现了欧拉公式将数学中5个重要常数(e、i、π、1、0)联系起来。欧拉之眼图案部分采用缩微工艺,将这5个常数与防伪技术相结合。第四枚“莫比乌斯带”作为一种神奇的拓扑图形,只有一个面和一条边界。邮票采用局部烫印工艺,丰富的色彩变幻更好地呈现莫比乌斯带的多维性质。在紫外光照射下,蚂蚁的足迹和画面下方的银河相呼应,寓意着从微观逐步扩展到更广阔的宏观领域。
邮票印制工艺设计围绕表现内容延伸,依托画面效果进行渲染,集艺术性、科学性、防伪性于一体。首次使用的日光型荧光油墨,在日光下与紫外灯下可呈现不同的荧光效果,通过画面的多维视角呼应数学知识的多维性;极细线印制打破邮票印制精细度的记录,用高精度印制技术体现数学学科的严谨性;“钥匙”样式异形齿孔,受“数学是打开科学之门的钥匙”名言启发而设计,寓意用数学之匙解锁科学之谜。
