AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, is an infectious disease caused by virus, resulting in loss of immune response to various diseases and eventually in death of the patient. Ever since the first case was diagnosed in 1981, AIDS has spread across the whole world, seriously threatening the health and lives of the people. To facilitate control and final elimination of AIDS, the World Health Organization designated 1st December each year the “World AIDS DAY”.

P.S. 艾滋病是一种由艾滋病毒，即人类免疫缺陷病毒（Human Immunodeficiency Virus，简称HIV）侵入人体后破坏人体免疫功能，使人体发生多种不可治愈的感染和肿瘤，最后导致被感染者死亡的一种严重传染病。艾滋病的医学术语全称是“获得性免疫缺陷综合征”（Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome，简称AIDS）。根据联合国艾滋病规划署2001年的统计资料，日前全世界艾滋病毒感染人数高达3610万，20年来全球共有约2200万人死于艾滋病。翻开人类的疾病史，几乎每个时代都有令人惶恐不安、触目惊心的”世纪之疫”，如17世纪的黑死病，18世纪~19世纪的霍乱、黄热病和肺结核，20世纪的癌症，但艾病所引发的从生理到心理的震荡是空前的。为唤起全球对艾滋病流行的关注，世界卫生组织将每年的12月1日定为世界艾滋病日，以推动世界各国对艾滋病的重视，并帮助不幸感染艾滋病的人们。
2003年12月1日，为了唤起更多人对艾滋病这个沉重话题的关注，国家邮政局发行了《世界防治艾滋病日》纪念邮票。
