The Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze River has been the largest water control and hydropower project in the world so far. By preventing floods, generating electricity, providing water transport and supplying water, the Three Gorges Project will bring economic and social benefits and accelerate China’s modernization construction. After ten years of construction, the project has achieved its second-phase targets, storing water on the left-bank dam, with successful trial double-lane navigation through five stages of ship locks, and with the first generating sets starting operation and being connected to the grid. This is a milestone in the construction of the Three Gorges Project.

长江三峡工程是中国，也是世界上最大的水利枢纽工程。三峡工程水库具有防洪、发电、航运等综合功能，可产生巨大的经济效益。

长江三峡工程，是在改革开放和现代化建设的新时期，我国实施的一项特大型水利水电工程，具有防洪、发电、航运、环保等巨大综合利用效益，不仅在我国的水利建设史上是空前的，在世界水利建设史上也是罕见的。
三峡工程也是一项巨大的社会工程，它包含着百万移民、扶贫开发、社会重组、建设三峡新型经济带等一系列世界性课题。
长江三峡不仅由钢筋混凝土浇筑而成，还将以自己所包含的无数中国人的梦想、追求、奉献和牺牲，成为中华民族的又一座历史纪念碑。

70年前，我国民主主义革命的伟大先行者孙中山先生，就曾提出利用三峡水力和电力资源的设想。新中国成立后，毛泽东、邓小平和其他老一辈无产阶级革命家，为兴建三峡工程倾注了心血。1992年4月3日七届人大五次会议批准兴建，1994年12月14日正式开工。总工期为17年，第一期工程5年，以大江截流为标准;第二期工程6年，至2003年实现首批机组发电，永久性船闸通航;第三期工程6年，到2009年全部完成。1997年11月8日，大江截流一举成功，宣告了首期工程的胜利结束。

历经十年建设，三峡工程于2003年6月1日实现了左岸大坝下闸蓄水，6月16日双线五级船闸试通航，8月首批机组发电并网。这标志着三峡二期工程胜利完成。
