According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2002 is the year of horse. Horses have been in close relations with mankind. It is verified that the domestication of horse is one of the marks of social productivity development, first occurred in the Patriarchal Period. Having a special affection to horse, the Chinese people regard them not only as an advantageous means of production and transportation, but also a symbol of spirit, emotion and talent. Such affection developed into an extensive and profound horse culture, which has infiltrated inton Chinese characters, fine arts, music and so on. The phrase “victory upon arrival by horse” is used even today as good wish to one’s career and praise for success, and “spirit of dragon and horse” is praise for one’s great vigor.

担纲壬午年马票设计工作的王虎鸣谈道：我国每年的生肖票设计都是本着以中华民族传统文化为出发点、以民间美术为主题、力求把握住生肖票的属性这样一个原则，使设计风格更加纯朴，特点更加突出，做到彻底的原汁原味。

此次他选用了一件线条简洁流畅、黑白两色的陕西凤翔泥塑马，作为今年第一枚生肖票的主体形象。立体形象的使用，在于与蛇年生肖票的平面形式形成在视觉上的对比，在方寸之间凸现出个性的变化，同时也保持了生肖票的连续属性。在色彩的处理上，王虎鸣打破了传统的视觉属性，将泥塑马简朴的黑白两色放置在大红的背景之上，体现出中国传统的喜庆色彩，用以渲染邮票的贺岁气氛。在第二枚邮票的红方斗上，一个大大的楷体“马”字，也体现出了民间新春贴“福”字的祥和习俗。
