Zheng Chenggong (1624-1662) was from the Shijing Village of Nan’an County in Fujian. During 1661 and 1662, leading a troop of 25,000 soldiers and several hundred warships, he started off from Xiamen, passed Penghu Islands and attacked Taiwan which had been occupied by Dutch colonialists. With assistance of the local people, and after several months of fierce fighting, the recovery of Taiwan, a treasured island of China, ended the 38-year colonial domination. The triumph not only formed a glorious page in Chinese history, but also added immortal chapter in the world anti-colonialist struggle. The commemoration of Zheng’s recovery of Taiwan expressed the wish of the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait for the realization of early peaceful national reunification.

祖国宝岛台湾于明朝末年被荷兰殖民者侵占，台湾人民遭受了残酷的殖民统治。郑成功是我国明未清初时期著名的民族英雄，福建南安人，因南明隆武帝赐姓朱，故号“国姓爷”。为收复台湾，郑成功率领25000名将士，乘大小数百艘战船，于1661年3月从厦门出发，向台湾的荷兰殖民者发起进攻。在台湾人民的支援下，经过近一年战斗，1662年2月，荷兰殖民者缴械投降，从而结束了荷兰在台湾38年的殖民统治，收复了祖国宝岛台湾。

郑成功本名森，字大木，福建南安人。明末名将，民族英雄。隆武二年，反对其父郑芝龙降清，于南澳(今广东)起兵抗清。永历十五年，率领将士数万人，自厦门经澎湖，于台湾禾寮登陆，围攻荷兰总督所在地赤嵌城，击溃敌人从巴达维亚派来的援兵，经过八个月的战斗，荷兰殖民主义者陷入绝境，于康熙元年二月一日率军投降，台湾岛被全部收回。他在台湾建立行政机构，推行屯田、开垦土地，改进耕作技术，促进了台湾社会经济的发展。
