Shown on both stamps are ancient wooden seagoing crafts. The Chinese boat was an oceangoing vessel of the Song Dynasty, excavated in Quanzhou, Fujian Province. The design and building of this 700-year old vessel synthesize many techniques and meet various performance requirements, boasting high technology content. The Portuguese boat was a lateener for fishing or seagoing in the 15th century. This kind of boat, due to its outstanding performance, was still widely used in the 18th Century. China was one of the first nations in the world to start ocean-going trips, and Portugal was once an ocean power in history. The stamps embody the two peoples’ intelligence in conquering the ocean in history and the friendship between the two nations.

中葡两国于2001年11月8日联合发行《古代帆船》邮票一套2枚。两枚邮票分别表现了中葡两国13-15世纪的古代帆船。中国的古代帆船是1974年在福建泉州湾后渚港发掘的13世纪宋代海船，古船残长24.2米，复原长度可达34米，宽11米，型深4米，载重量达200吨。葡萄牙的古船是14-15世纪的三桅快帆船。
