The sacred torch of the games was lit on September 15, 2000, in Sydney, Australia. As one of the biggest events so far in the new millennium, the games have attracted athletes from many countries. China sent large contingent composed of 500 athletes, coaches and officials. Chinese athletes participated in more than 170 events from 25 programs. This is the largest number of events that China has participated in and the largest number of athletes taking part. The Chinese athletes demonstrated their capability and talents.

注： 2000年10月31日，为纪念国际邮票钱币博览会在广州市举办，中国邮政以2000年9月15日发行的《第27届奥林匹克运动会》小型张制作双联小型张1枚，面值16元，售价24元，设计为竖双联。这是中国邮政发行的第一枚纪念邮票双联小型张。

P.S. 第27届奥林匹克运动会于2000年9月15日至10月1日在澳大利亚第一大城市悉尼举行，有199个国家和地区的10651名运动选手参加总共27个大项300个小项的比赛。中国派出由311名运动员及教练员和官员共约500人组成的大型体育代表团，参加25个大项、174个小项的比赛，以金牌28枚、银牌16枚和铜牌15枚，奖牌总数59枚的优异成绩一举跃入了奖牌榜世界三强行列，金牌和奖牌总数这两项指标不仅都创下了中国自参加奥运会以来的单届最高纪录，而且均名列世界第三位。
小型张主体图案在朱红的底色上涂上一抹形似闪电的灰色，然后在表现“2000”主题的三个白色圆环上添加上了两个黄、黑色的圆环，十分巧妙地组合成为代表奥运的五环图。
