More than 100 years ago, Hong Kong was a fishing village in south China. It was ceded to Britain in 1897 and will return to the motherland in 1997 when the Chinese government will resume the sovereignty over it.

After about 100 years’ development, Hong Kong has become a famous modern international financial, manufacturing and trade center.

The actual development of Hong Kong started in the 1960s. Along with the rapid growth of the world economy, urban buildings and transport, communication, trade and recreation facilities have increased in Hong Kong. In the 1970, several expressways were built to link the new towns, and the subway and electrified railway in Kowloon were built and but into operation one after another. The Kwai Chung container wharf in Hong Kong has become the biggest in the world. At present, Hong Kong boasts of world first-class communication facilities with its communication network connected with every corner of the world, as well as satellith earth stations.

The City Hall in Central District, the Arts Center and Elizabeth Gymnasium in Wanchai District. In Hong Kong Island and Hon Kong Gymnasium in Kowloon are the cultural centers of Hong Kong, where quite a lot of international art performances are made. In the fields of film, television and pop songs, people of talent have come forth in large numbers in Hong Kong. Many film stars and singers are Particularly well known among overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia.

According to the agreement between the governments of China and Britain, the Chinese government will put and end to the rule of Britain over Hong Kong and resume the sovereignty over it as of July 1, 1997.
