经济特区是一个主权国家或地区划出一定的区域范围，在对外经济活动中，采取更为开放政策以吸引外国投资、增加外汇收入、繁荣本地区及附近地区的经济。
特区一般设在地理位置优越、交通方便的港口或边境城镇。我国从1979年9月起，在深圳、珠海、汕头和厦门设立了经济特区。1988年还决定把海南建成全国最大的经济特区。
这套邮票分别表现了深圳、珠海、汕头、厦门及海南5个经济特区的建设成就。
