Whooping crane is a rare speciality of the North America under the protection of the US law, while black-necked crane is a rare bird found only in China and the first grade wild animal under the special protection of the state. Both species are the first grade animals under the protection of the CITES.

鹤是一类体型大小不等的大中型迁徒性涉禽，以喙、颈、腿“三长”为其特征，隶于鹤形目鹤科鹤属。世界上共有15种，我国有8种。它们的主要活动场所为草原和沼泽地带，以植物茎叶、谷物等为主要食物，也混食小鱼、虾、昆虫及软体动物等。鹤性格幽闲，体态秀逸，呜声嘹亮，舞姿翩翩，行止潇洒，楚楚动人，它在全世界不同的文化中，都意味着纯洁和神圣，为吉祥、美好、幸福、长寿的化身。由于历史原因及现实生存环境、条件、习性的不同，各种鹤的存世量也不一样，美洲鹤和黑颈鹤均属濒于灭绝的珍稀物种。

1994年10月9日，为表达中美两国人民的友谊和体现了两国政府和人民为保护濒临灭绝的野生动物所作的不懈努力，邮电部与美国邮政总局联合发行了《美洲鹤与黑颈鹤》特种邮票，全套2枚。
