1950年朝鲜战争爆发以后，美国派兵进驻朝鲜，轰炸中国东北边境城镇。中国人民志愿军于1950年10月组成，由彭德怀任总司令兼政治委员，并于10月19日开赴朝鲜前线，和金日成领导的朝鲜人民军共同作战，抗美援朝。经过五次大规模的战役，把美国军队及李承晚军队逼回三八线附近。1951年7月10日，美方同中朝方面进行停战谈判，谈判过程中，战争仍持续不断， 直至1953年7月27日，双方才最后签订停战协定。
