The lighthouse was invented for navigation in ancient times with the development of water transportation and fishery. It has evolved from the simple tower with “a light to guide ferrying boats at night” into the modern lighthouse. Recommended by Maritime Safety Administration of China, the Maota Pagoda Lighthouse of Shanghai, the Jiangxin Pagoda Lights of Wenzho, the Huaniaoshan Lighthouse of Zhejiang, the Laotieshan Lighthouse of Dalian and the Lin’gao Lighthouse of Hainan were elected Historical Lighthouses of the World by the International Association of Maritime Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities in 1997. The five sites are typical representatives of Chinese historical lighthouses. Their election symbolizes the important status of China in the world history of lighthouses.

随着渔业和水运的发展，人类很早就发明了作为人工导航标志的灯塔，后来从“燃灯以照夜渡”的宝塔发展为现代化的灯塔。

邮票图案中展示的我国现存具有代表性的五座历史灯塔，经中国海事局申请，1997年入选国际航标协会确认的“世界历史灯塔”。它们的入选标志着我国在世界灯塔史上的重要地位。
