Established in 1989, the 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a main forum for economic cooperation in the Asia Pacific region. It holds an annual Economic Leaders’ Meeting preceded by a Ministerial Meeting. China became a member of APEC in 1991 and plays hosts to APEC Meeting in the year 2001. The 9th AEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting takes place in Shanghai on 20-21 October. The theme of the 2001 APEC Meetings is Meeting New Challenges in the New Century: Achieving Common Prosperity through Participation and Cooperation.

亚太经济合作组织(简称亚太经合组织或APEC)，是亚太地区的一个经济合作组织。1989年11月在澳大利亚首都堪培拉成立。

2001年10月20日，“APEC”年会及领导人非正式会议在中国上海召开。这是“APEC”进程中的一次历史盛会，也是我国自建国以来承办的规格最高的国际会议，是在新世纪伊始的一次重大外交活动。无论在“APEC”的历史上，还是在中国的历史上都具有特别重要的意义。中国作为东道主，可借举办这次盛会之际，向亚太展示和宣传中国，把中国对外开放和经济合作发展到一个更高水平。
