The editorial says: “At zero hour (Beijing time) on July 1, 1997, the whole world listened attentively to the solemn bell tolls sounding in the East.” “The tolls, which reverberated around the whole world, earnestly announced the time has come for the government of the People’s Republic of China to resume exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong! And that it is the right time for the Chinese nation to wipe out the disgrace of the past more than 150 years and feel proud and elated!” the editorial says.

With the conclusion of the handover ceremony between the Chinese and British governments and the announcement of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the long-awaited dream of the Chinese nation and the long-cherished wish of generations for Hong Kong’s return is fulfilled, it continues.

For the day to come, the Chinese Government, in its quest for national unity as well as the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong, put forward the proposal of “one country , two systems.” The proposal has provided practical means to solve the issues of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao, and for the eventual reunification of the country. Practice has showed the principles of “one country, two systems” and “Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong” are in the best interests of the Hong Kong people, and they have gained wide support from people in Hong Kong and China’s inland.
