The world table tennis championships have a long history in the world’s sports and a wide-range influential championship, of which the size is only next to the Olympic Games. Altogether 42 world table tennis championships have been held in 15 countries since 1926. The International Table Tennis Federation held an executive meeting in Tokyo on September 25, 1992, to entrust Tianjin, China, to sponsor the 43rd world Table Tennis championships May 1995. This would be another high level match in China after 1961 when Beijing succeeded in hosting the 26th world Table Tennis Championships.

To arrange the activity under the theme of “peace, friendship, prosperity and development”, ceremoniously, warmly, brilliantly and perfectly, Tianjin had built a 111-hectare sports center in its southwest. The center consists of a gymnasium, a large and a small halls for exercises, a comprehensive service zone, a hotel and supportive facilities. The dish-shaped gymnasium is 35 meters high with 108 meters in span. It has six 200-meter track and field runways.

From May 1st to 4th, more than 1,200 sportsmen and sportswomen from 116 countries and regions participated in the 43rd world Table Tennis Championships in Tianjin by carrying out 4,000 group and individual matches for seven championships. It was the largest get-together in the history of the world table tennis in terms of participants and scale.
