Football is one of the most popular games in the world, and the FIFA World Cup has become a festival of football fans throughout the world. The 2002 FIFA World Cup is going to be held in R.O. Korea and Japan from 31st May to 30th June, when 32 strong football teams from around the world are to gather in the quadrennial game to display their splendor. The competition has caught considerable attention, as it is the first time for Asia to hold it and that China is making its debut. With unremitting efforts of several generations, the Chinese men footballers finally fulfilled the long-cherished wish “to win the Asian play-off for the World Cup Finals”. It is a new milestone in the Chinese history of football development.

The FIFA World Cup, often simply called the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men’s national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War.
