邓小平是伟大的马克思主义者，无产阶级革命家、政治家、军事家、外交家，中国共产党、中国人民解放军、中华人民共和国的主要领导人之一，中国社会主义改革开放和现代化建设的总设计师，邓小平理论的创立者。

邓小平同志的军事生涯，在他光辉的一生中占有重要位置。早在红军初创时期，邓小平同志就是我军的创建者和重要领导人之一。在抗日战争和解放战争中，他多次临危受命，率领部队出色地完成了党中央、中央军委赋予的重大任务。他长期从事军队政治工作，注重从政治上观察处理问题，表现出非凡的战略眼光、坚强的党性原则和卓越的领导才能。

进入新时期，邓小平同志在开创中国特色社会主义道路的历史进程中，在领导军队和国防建设的伟大实践中，把马克思主义基本原理与中国的国情、军情和时代特征结合起来，对军队和国防建设作出了一系列具有战略意义的重大决策，创造性地提出了一系列治军建军的方针原则，形成了邓小平新时期军队建设思想。

1989年11月在中共十三届五中全会上，他辞去了最后担任的中央军委主席职务。1997年2月19日邓小平在北京病逝。
