The World Geological Conference is the oldest and largest academic conferences among the world’s science conferences. It is a grand meeting of the world’s geologists and has a reputation of being the geological “Olympiad”. Since the First World Geological Conference was held in Paris in 1878, it has been held once every three or four years. Its goal is to promote the basic research of the geological science and the development of its applied research, provide a large meeting place for geologists to exchange their ideas and information , and offer geologists an opportunity to inspect geological issues and features through geological tours with the help of International Union of Geological Sciences.

The 30th World Geological Conference, which was held in Beijing form August 4 to 14 1996, was organized by the China Geological Association, the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources of the People’s Republic of China and various governmental organizations, industrial departments and academic organizations involved in the field of geology with the co-operation and financial assistance of International Union of Geological Sciences. To endorse the suggestion of the Council of the 28th and 29th World Geology Conferences and International Union of Geological Sciences, the academic activities of this conference put emphasis on the debate on mainland geology ,especially geological formation, energy, ores, mineral resources, environmental protection, the reduction of geological disasters closely related to mainland geology and their relationship with human survival and sustainable development. In addition to providing delegates with almost all the geological travel routes to almost every part of China, the conference organized the large-scale science and technology exhibition “GEO EXPO’96”. The conference drew more participants from more countries and regions than any other previous conferences. More than 6,000 members from 116 countries and regions took part in the conference.

地质学主要研究地壳的组成物质，各种地质作用以及地球的形成和发展历史及其在国民经济中的应用等问题。地质学家们在研究这些不受疆界和行政区划局限、控制的地质体时，深感有一个定期聚会场所，以便交流经验，沟通情况，统一图例、色标、术语等之必要。于是经过多年酝酿，终于在1878年于法国巴黎召开了第一届国际地质大会，虽然只有23个国家的310位学者参加，但随着以后每隔三四年即召开一次，逐渐发展成为国际科学界中历史悠久、规模巨大、学科广泛、极负盛名的学术会议，其作用之巨大，影响之广泛，已被公认为是世界“地学界的奥林匹克”。国际地质大会受到国际地质科学联合会的赞助。其宗旨是：促进地质学研究和应用研究的发展，为地质科学工作者提供一个交流学术思想和最新信息的场所，通过有组织的地质旅行提供考察野外地质问题和了解地质特征的机会。

第三十届国际地质大会于1996年8月4日至14日在北京举行。本届大会主题为大陆地质讨论，侧重讨论与之有关的能源，矿产资源、环境保护、地质减灾，以及它们与人类生存和可持续发展的关系，并特别注意加强对当前的重大问题的综合性、多学科的讨论。来自世界上126个国家和地区的6261位代表出席。大会得到中国政府的高度重视和支持，国务院总理李鹏担任大会名誉主席。本届大会处于世纪之交，肩负着总结和展示20世纪地学的成绩水平，明确21世纪地学发展方向的任务。大会收到国内外论文8092篇。第30届大会组委会除为代表们安排了79条几乎遍及全国各地的地质旅行路线外，还举办了71个各种学术报告会、152个专题研讨会、4个大型主题报告及大型科技展览等等，以广泛交流地质科学基础研究及应用研究的成果，并展现作为世界第三矿业大国的中国大陆地质及其特征，从而使这次大会不仅提供了显示中国地质科学在国际科技舞台举足轻重的地位及取得成就的极好机会，也为我们学习借鉴外国的先进经验创造了条件，因而具有重要意义。

1996年8月4日，为祝贺第30届国际地质大会在我国举行，邮电部发行了《第三十届国际地质大会》纪念邮票，全套1枚。
