The People’s Liberation Army , including strategic nuclear forces, an army, navy and air force, serves as the military of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Its 2.5 million strong force makes it the largest army, in terms of sheer numbers of troops, in the world. The PLA was established in the 1920s as the military arm of the Communist Party of China. It was originally named the Red Army. The People’s Liberation Army’s insignia consists of a round device with a design of five stars and the Chinese characters “ba-yi” (August 1, the anniversary of the 1927 Nanchang Uprising), surrounded by wheat ears and cog wheels. (Use of the insignia is governed by the 1984 Military Service Law.)

1927年8月1日，周恩来、贺龙等领导了南昌武装起义。这次起义是中国共产党独立领导武装斗争的开始。1933年6月30日，中共中央革命军事委员会发布《关于决定“八一”为中国工农红军成立纪念日决议》。中国人民解放军在其发展史上，曾使用过四个称谓。1927年8月21日，中国共产党正式建立中国工农革命军，其主力为南昌起义的部队。1928 年5月25日，中国工农革命军改名为中国工农红军。 1937年抗日战争爆发后，国共两党第二次合作。 1937年8月22日、12月25日，红军分别改编为八路军、新四军，以后又组成了华南抗日纵队。 1948年11月1日，全军正式统一称中国人民解放军。
